Jan De Nul launches cable vessel
Newbuild targets deepwater offshore grid connections

Jan De Nul has launched its subsea cable-laying vessel William Thomson, one of two identical ships under construction.

The company said the vessel, launched at the CMHI Haimen shipyard in China, has a cargo capacity of 28,000 tonnes and a length of 215 metres, making it among the largest of its kind.

Jan De Nul added that both vessels are designed to install subsea cables in waters of up to 4,000 metres depth and reduce the need for return trips during operations.

The ships have been developed by the company’s in-house experts and are intended to improve efficiency, lower costs and reduce environmental impact.

Sister vessel Fleeming Jenkin was launched in October 2025 and is scheduled for delivery in the final quarter of 2026, with William Thomson set to follow in the first half of 2027.

“The William Thomson and its identical sister, the Fleeming Jenkin, bring together all the expertise in cable installation that we have built up over the past fifteen years,” said Wouter Vermeersch, director subsea cables offshore energy at Jan De Nul.

“They are the highest-performing and most efficient cable-laying vessels on the market.”

Both vessels will work on TenneT’s 2GW offshore grid programme, installing more than 2,800 kilometres of 525kV DC cables across four connections.

Jan De Nul will also deploy one of the vessels in 2028 to install three 220kV AC cables linking Princess Elisabeth Island to shore in Belgium.

The company is adding five further vessels to support subsea cable installation and protection, including trenching support and rock installation vessels.
