WindEurope 2026: Urge for stronger wind farm security
Policy paper highlights rising offshore infrastructure threats

WindEurope has called for increased physical protection of Europe’s wind energy infrastructure as threats to offshore assets grow.

The industry body presented a new policy paper on offshore wind security, warning that energy infrastructure across Europe’s seas faces rising risks of sabotage and interference, it said.

Wind farms currently generate 20% of Europe’s electricity and are critical to energy security, it added.

Export cables, substations and offshore assets are spread across large maritime areas and are difficult to protect.

Disruptions could impact grids, industry and households beyond individual projects.

Governments at the North Sea Summit agreed that protecting offshore wind farms requires coordinated governance, situational awareness and clear funding frameworks.

“The European wind industry is doing its part to protect offshore wind farms. With the new policy paper, we stress that the physical security of Europe’s wind turbines must be treated as an integral part of energy security,” said Tinne van der Straeten, chief executive WindEurope.

“Not as an afterthought. Wind turbines are critical energy infrastructure. Their protection needs a risk-based, proportionate and clear cost allocation between Government and industry.”
